Home Items That Are Dangerous for Kids
When you have kids in the home, you want to create a safe environment for them. There are, though, a lot of items that we all have in our homes that are dangerous for children.
While the dangers of some of the items in this list are well known. Others are not so immediately obvious. All the items here, though, are common causes of accidents in the home.
You can’t clear every single potential hazard out of your home. But being aware of the things that do often harm kids will make you more aware of the potential dangers.
You will already know about the dangers of things like matches, bleach and detergents. So, in this post we look at the less obvious dangerous items in the home.
Here is a list of common items in the home that can be dangerous for kids that you may not have thought about before.
1. Your Purse
The shiny coins inside your purse are attractive to young children. Especially if they want play shopping like mommy does.
Small coins are a choking hazard for young kids. There’s also the question of hygiene. Money touched by lots of people before it gets into your purse. There’s no telling what may be on the notes and coins in your purse.
2. Your Food and Drink
Kids are curious, so if you leave your food unattended, children are likely to want to know what it tastes like.
It’s easy to do. You answer the phone, or answer the front door, and in seconds, your child is eating your food or drinking your drink.
Kids can choke on things like nuts, popcorn, and grapes. If your child has allergies, this can pose a danger as well. Hot drinks are also a danger to children, As, of course, are alcoholic drinks.
3. Big Bother’s or Sister’s Toys
Another thing that young kids love to do is copy what their older brothers and sisters do.
Toys made for older children are not suitable for young children. They may contain choking hazards or dangerous materials.
Make sure that big brother or sister put their toys and hobbies out of the reach of younger children.

Medications and supplements look a lot like candy. Things like aspirin and other medications can be harmful for children.
The danger of kids taking medication is well known. But did you know that vitamins and supplements can also harm a young child?
Keep all medications and supplements well out of the reach of children. Be careful if someone comes to visit as well. Make sure grandma keeps her pills somewhere safe too.
5. Plastic Shopping Bags and Wrappers
It seems that everything has a plastic wrapping these days. That’s bad for the environment, and it could be a danger to your children.
Make sure you dispose of plastic bags and wrappers when you bring the shopping home.
Plastic bags are a suffocation risk for kids. They might put the bags over their heads while you are unpacking the rest of the shopping.
Trash bags and plastic wrap are a danger too. Make sure you keep all plastic bags and plastic wrap in a cupboard that young children can’t reach.
Batteries are very dangerous if kids swallow them. It can be fatal.
Don’t leave batteries where children can find them. Make sure that the batteries in toys can’t fall out and children can take them out.
All batteries need to be kept in a safe place. Small, button batteries are the most dangerous because they are easy for kids to swallow.
7. Scissors and Needles
Young children love to emulate mom. So be careful with your sewing needles, scissors, and nail clippers.
If children try to trim their nails like mom does, they are likely trim the end of their finger too.
Keep all sharp tools out of the reach of children. Even things like nail clippers and nail files could be dangerous in the hands of young children.
8. Heated Hair Tools
Heated hair tools, like curling and straightening irons, stay hot after use.
Many children suffer burns because mommy was in a rush and left her curling iron out to cool down.
Keep heated hair tools out of the reach of children when they are not in use. And, put them on a high counter to cool down when you have finished using them.
9. Your Jewelry Box
Your jewelry box has lots of pretty, sparkly things in it. Things that young kids would love to play with. It’s also filled with things that kids might swallow.
Small items, like earnings and rings, pose a choking hazard. Necklaces, which kids will want to try on, are a potential strangulation hazard.
Always put jewelry away as soon as you take it off. Keep your jewelry box somewhere that children can’t reach or buy a lockable jewelry box.
If you have any magnetic toys in the home, make sure that the magnets can’t come out.
Things that have small magnets in them include refrigerator magnets, and magnetic alphabets.
Small magnets pose a serious risk to children if they get swallowed. If a child does swallow a magnet, you should seek medical help. It may need to surgery to remove it.
