Tips to Improve Your Home Security
Guest Post By: Sarah Lawson
Home security is an issue that many homeowners face. While we would like to believe that we live in safe areas, burglaries are all too common nowadays. There are, thankfully, many ways that you can protect your home, which we have compiled into a list of 5 actions you can take to improve your home security.
Fit Secure Locks
Locks are your first defense against intruders, so are crucial parts of any home security system. In a new home, fitting secure locks on windows and doors can protect your home from the offset. If your home is older, it is advisable to check your locks every 5 years so that you can replace them if necessary. Especially if you live in a rented home, locks can go unchanged for years as different tenants come and go. So, it’s good practice to regularly check your locks, and have them replaced if needed.
Install Residential Gates
If you have the space, and means, to have gates around your property, it can be a great way to feel safe at home. Installing residential gates can be one of the most effective ways to secure your home, as it directly prevents intruders from entering your property. You can also monitor who is attempting to gain access to your home and directly control who does and does not.
Invest in a Good Surveillance System
CCTV is not just for business purposes; many people choose to invest in this surveillance system for their homes. It can cover as much of your property as you like, with most people opting for entrances and exits to your property.
Lighting is a good way to keep your home protected, as well as increase the functionality of a CCTV security system. A great deterrent to robbers, sensor lighting takes away the cover of darkness that intruders rely on and can also notify you of anyone trespassing on your property.
Get into Good Safety Habits
Keeping your home safe is everyone in your household’s responsibility, as one mistake could lead to leaving your house vulnerable to theft. Many people are forgetful and leave doors unlocked, or keys in plain sight, which can make your house vulnerable to theft. Encouraging everyone in the house to keep your property secure, including windows, doors, gates and driveways, can lessen the risk of intrusion or burglary. Getting into a good routine with safety measures can greatly improve your home security.
Keep Valuables Safe
Keeping your valuables safe is something that many people don’t think about until something gets stolen. However, being proactive in your home security is the best way to reduce the risk of being burgled. Keeping valuables such as purses, cash, and keys out of sight is a great way to keep your home safe.
Investing in a safe to keep your valuables secure can increase the security of your home too, as in the event that someone gains entry to your home, they won’t be able to take valuables such as jewellery or cash.
