Why Buy a Personal Alarm for a Child?

It is never our intention to scare people into buying personal safety devices on this site. The world is a scary enough place, without us telling you that there is an assailant, a thief or a child abductor waiting on every street corner when we all that there isn’t. However, this site was created by a concerned father who learned that a man had been spotted prowling around near his children’s school trying to entice children into his car, so there are some very good reasons why your children should carry a personal attack alarm with them.

When you hear about something like that, you can’t help but worry. Even if you pick your kid’s up from school, you can’t always be parked right outside the school doors, and then, when the kids get a bit older, they are going to want to come home from school on their own and go out in the evenings and weekends with their friends.

You can give your children advice and try to drill some safety precautions for kids into them, but you can’t wrap them up in cotton wool and you can’t be with them 24/7, because they have to be allowed to spread their wings and start to learn how to look after themselves.

What you can do, though, is give them a personal alarm for kids and teach them how to use it properly. That way, they will have a personal safety device that will alert people if they do get into difficulties and a device that will scare potential attackers away.

What Are Personal Alarms for Kids?

Personal alarms for kids are not any different in basic design from personal alarms for women or general purpose personal alarms. They are simply electronic personal security devices that emit a high-pitched siren when they are activated. The only difference with the best personal alarms that have been designed for children is that they look like small toys or charms, so a child will feel less reluctant to carry it with them or attach it to their school bag.

Most personal attack alarms for children are designed to look a keychain and they are activated by simply pulling the alarm away from the chain. That makes them easy for a child to operate without having to fumble around looking for a button to press in an emergency.

What Age Can Kids Have a Personal Alarm?

Carrying a battery operated personal alarm is legal for any person, of any age, in all states in the US. As far as we know, it is also legal in all countries in the world. You can also take a battery operated personal alarm with you on most commercial airlines, so you can take a personal protection alarm on vacation with you.

With regards to the age that a child should be given a personal safety alarm, that will depend on the parents and the child. In our opinion, any child that is old enough to be out on their own, even if it’s for just short periods of time, is old enough to carry a personal panic alarm.

Cautionary Notes about Personal Alarms for Kids

Having said that personal security alarms are suitable for all kids that are out their own, parents do need to make sure that their children understand how to use the alarm and they need to understand that the alarm is not a toy. Here are the things that we think a child should be taught about using a personal alarm for kids.

A Personal Alarm Is Not a Toy

It’s important that children of any age are taught that a personal alarm is not a toy, even though some personal alarm for kids do look a lot like a small toy.

Although keychain alarms designed for children cannot in any way be thought of as an offensive weapon, they are still very loud, so if it were to be held up to another child’s ear as a prank, for example, it could cause permanent hearing loss.

It Should Only Be Used in a Real Emergency

It should also be made clear to a child that a personal alarm should only be used in a real emergency, because of they are overused, people will simply start to ignore the sound of the alarm. Playing with an alarm a will, of course, also run down the battery.

It Must Be Kept Where the Child Can Get at It Quickly

One of the advantages of the personal attack alarms for children that we have listed in our reviews is that look cute. So, hopefully, a child will not want to hide the alarm out of sight as Fsoon as they are away from the watchful eyes of their parents. A personal safety alarm needs to be kept where the child can get at it quickly in an emergency, which is why the best types of personal alarms for kids are probably the key chain type of alarms that can be hung from a school bag.

This alarm also has a built-in flashlight, which can be useful, but the flashlight can also run down the batteries very quickly so, if you are buying this personal alarm for a child, it would be important to tell the child that the flashlight should only be used in an emergency.

The ladybug design is nice looking. It could be used as a bag attachment or as a key ring. Overall, we were impressed with this ladybug emergency key chain alarm for kids and we can understand why it’s so popular.

  • Comes with a 12-month manufacturer’s warranty
  • Simple pin-pull operation – easy for kids to use
  • The activation pin is securely lodged in the alarm to help avoid accidental activation

2. 130dB Emergency Personal Alarm Keychain for Children

personal alarm for kids keychain alarm for kids personal attack alarm for kids personal panic alarm for kidsIf ever there was a personal alarm designed for younger kids, then this is it! The alarm comes in a choice of two cute designs.

There is a blue personal alarm with a baby seal face design on it, or there is a pink alarm that has bunny rabbit motifs printed on it.

The alarm is quite small, it only measures 1.65 inches in width, but don’t let that put you off, because at 130dB, it’s still plenty loud enough to be a very effective personal alarm.

This is another neat little keychain style personal alarm device, so there are no fiddly buttons to find in an emergency. You simply yank the lanyard to activate the device and replace the pin to deactivate it.

What We Liked

  • Beautiful looking panic alarm for kids that packs a punch in volume
  • Easy to operate
  • Would make a great gift
  • The activation pin is at the bottom, so less chance of accidental activation
  • Nice size for kids

What You May Dislike

  • May be too small for some people
  • Probably not the most robust personal alarm we have ever seen

3. 130db Mini Dolphin SOS Panic Alarm for Kids

personal alarm for kids keychain alarm for kids personal attack alarm for kids personal panic alarm for kidsThe 130db Mini Dolphin SOS personal alarm is a cute looking personal safety alarm for children that comes with a neat downloadable app that will transmit your GPS location to up to five contacts at the press of a button.

The dolphin alarm is a 130dB alarm, so it’s loud enough to attract attention and to give an attacker a scare. It’s activated by a pin that is attached to a key ring, so you simply pull the keychain away from the dolphin to activate the alarm.

One of the things that we will point out about this model is that the pin is tricky to get back in again once the alarm has been activated. In one sense, that’s great, because it means that an attacker would have trouble silencing the alarm, but it also means that the alarm is difficult to shut off if it has been triggered by accident.

The alarm isn’t as small as it might appear to be on the images, but it’s small enough to be just right for little hands and to be not too obtrusive. The Dolphin 130db personal alarm for children is a nice combination of a cute charm and an effective personal safety device.

What We Liked

  • Cute looking keychain alarm for kids
  • Downloadable GPS positing alert app included
  • Very loud for such a cute looking alarm!
  • Easy to operate
  • Convenient key chain design

What You May Dislike

  • The pin is quite difficult to replace after activation
  • The GPS alert app is operated separately from the alarm, but still useful
  • Several people in reviews have commented that the dolphin looks angry – He looks happy enough to us!

4. 130dB Japanese Toy Style Personal Safety Alarm for Kids

personal alarm for kids keychain alarm for kids personal attack alarm for kids personal panic alarm for kidsThe 130dB Japanese toy style personal alarm for children is modern looking alarm that children, young and old, would not feel conspicuous carrying around with them.

The alarm is a keychain style alarm, so it is activated by pulling down on the alarm so that it separates from the keychain attachment. The pin of the alarm is tight enough so that accidental activations shouldn’t be too much of a problem, but not so tight that a child would have difficulty pulling it out.

This is the type of alarm that older kids would not mind using as a key ring or have hanging from their backpack or school bag. This is important, because an alarm that has been hidden away at the bottom of bag is not going to be any use at all.

All the alarms for kids that we have chosen are good value money, so you can’t expect any of them to withstand being run over by a truck, for example, but this alarm does seem to be very well made and possibly a bit more durable than some of the other alarms in this review.

What We Liked

  • Firm pin activation to help avoid accidental triggering of the alarm
  • Would suit both young and older kids
  • Good quality for the price
  • Has a 12-month warranty
  • Cute and loud personal alarm for children

What You May Dislike

  • Quite large for a keychain alarm
  • No instructions included
  • Choices of color would have been nice

5. 130 dB Mini Bee SOS Personal Alarm for Kids

personal alarm for kids, keychain alarm for kids, personal attack alarm for kids, personal panic alarm for kidsThe Mini Bee SOS Panic alarm is another great value for money personal alarm that kids will love, and it’s another alarm that comes with a downloadable GPS alert app for phones.

We’ve included this alarm in our personal alarms for kids reviews, but it’s a keychain alarm that kids, teens and young women would probably be happy to carry.

The alarm’s siren is 130db, which is generally accepted to be at the right level for and effective personal attack alarm. It is activated by pulling the alarm away from the keychain attachment.

Getting the pin back into the alarm is a bit tricky, but that makes it hard for an attacker to deactivate the alarm as well.

What We liked

  • Lovely, cute bee design
  • Loud, effective 130dB alarm siren
  • Simple keychain operation
  • Would suit older kids as well as younger ones
  • Nice for clipping onto a handbag, backpack or school bag

What You May Dislike

  • The GPS alert app is triggered separately, not automatically by the alarm
  • Tricky to replace the pin after activation

personal alarm for kids, keychain alarm for kids, personal attack alarm for kids, personal panic alarm for kidsOur final choice for the best personal alarms for children is this Mini Panda personal alarm safety keychain for kids, which is a 130dB keychain alarm that sounds as good as it looks!

This is another personal attack alarm that comes with a downloadable app for your phone that will instantly alert up to five contacts in your phone of your GPS position. However, please be aware that all the GPS alert apps that are included with the alarms in these reviews are activated separately from the phone, they are not activated as soon as the alarm is sounded.

The Mini Panda alarm is activated by a pin that is attached at the rear of the alarm, which is separate from the keychain attachment at the front of the alarm. Separating the activation pin from the key chain can be an advantage, because it helps prevent accidental activation.
