Camping Safety Tips
Camping with your family can be fun and rewarding. It’s a wonderful way to get closer to nature and kids love it. Whether you are camping for a weekend, or taking a longer camping vacation, there are some basic camping safety tips that you need to be aware of. 1. Go Prepared
Before we get onto any specific camping safety tips, here’s a general tip for first time campers. If you want to enjoy yourself and stay safe, make sure you take the right equipment and supplies with you. Consider the weather for the time year and the amount of time you will be sleeping out. Setting out with little more than a tent and a good supply of beers might seem like fun. But if you get lost and it gets cold, it won’t be very funny at all.
2. Keep the Campfire Safe
If you plan on having an open campfire, check first that campfires are allowed in the area that will be camping in. Campfires are not permitted in some areas. You may need to have a campfire permit. If you do have an open campfire, keep it small and keep it contained. Build the fire at least 15 feet from trees, shrubs and the walls of your tent. Have a means of extinguishing the fire in an emergency. This could be a bucket of water or it could be a small fire extinguishing aerosol. When you go to bed, make sure the campfire is completely extinguished.
3. Keep Your Campsite Clean
Keeping your campsite clean is good practice. It’s also an essential camping safety tip too. If you leave out unwashed dishes, scraps of food and trash, it could attract wild animals. Depending on which part of the country you are camping in, those wild animals might include bears and wolves. Remember too to store food properly. Food should be kept in airtight containers or in a car so it doesn’t attract wildlife.
4. Take a First Aid Kit
Take a basic first aid kit with you when you go camping. This should contain some bandages, antiseptic wipes, antibacterial ointment and ibuprofen. 5. Stay Hydrated
Keep yourself and the kids well-hydrated. Keep a water bottle with you at all time and remember to drink from it regularly. When you are running around having fun in the sun, it’s easy to forget to drink enough water. Remember, the recommended daily amount of water that every adult should drink is eight 8-Oz glasses a day. Only drink water from safe sources. Even a clean looking stream will contain bacteria. If you don’t want to carry your water supply around with you, use a water purification product to clean the water before you drink it.
6. Use Insect Repellent
When you are camping, insects are not only annoying, they can ruin the whole experience. To avoid getting mosquito bites and ticks, use insect repellent day and night. Insect bites can be painful, and they can get infected. Use a good-quality, waterproof bug spray when you are camping. Cover your arms and legs when you are hiking through long grass or undergrowth. You should also check for ticks daily and remove them straight away.
7. Watch Out for the Local Wildlife
Don’t get too friendly with the local wildlife. Even the cute animals. It is best to avoid feeding or touching wild animals. They may turn on you and they may carry diseases and parasites. If you do have a close encounter with wildlife, wash your hands with soap and water or use an antibacterial hand sanitizer afterwards.
8. Give the Kids a Safety Whistle
Exploring is part of the fun of camping, especially for children. It’s easy for kids to get lost in the woods, though, so don’t let them wander too far from your campsite. It’s a good idea to give children an emergency safety whistle. If they carry one of these very loud whistles with them, they will have a way to call for help if they get lost.
9. Protect Yourself Against the Sun
When you are camping, you will be exposed to the sun much more than you probably are when you are at home. That makes protecting your skin from the sun even more important. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen and remember to keep it topped up. The UV rays from the sun can cause sunburn even on overcast days.
10. Enjoy the Outdoors and Be Alert
More and more people try camping every year. It’s an affordable way to take a vacation and it is a great way to get away from it all, but you do need to stay alert to be safe.
