If you want to hide your valuables but still have easy access to them, a wall safe would be a reliable and convenient solution for you. However, if you don’t want to spend a lot of money hiring a contractor to install a safe in the floor or in a wall, you will need to know how to install a wall safe properly. Your valuables will not be secure if you do not fit the safe box correctly. So, here is an explanation of how to install a wall safe.

Pre-Installation Considerations

First, let’s look at some of the things to consider when buying a wall safe and preparing to install your chosen safe.

Select Wall Safe Based on Your Needs

The best wall safes are excellent for keeping valuables safe and accessible. But, before purchasing a safe and installing it in the wall, you need to consider a few simple things:

Firstly, there is a variety of different sizes of wall safes available on the market. Most wall safes are usually 15-16 inches wide and will fit easily within the studs of a wall. The width of the wall studs is generally up to 16-24 inches. But this is not always the case. So, bear in mind the width between the wall studs in your chosen location when choosing a wall safe for your home.

You will also need to consider what you will want to keep inside your wall safe, and then choose a safe that is a suitable size. However, wall safes are designed to fit in between the wall studs. The depth of a standard wall is only six inches. So, wall safes are much smaller than free-standing home safes.

Also, you will need to look at the type of locking system on a wall safe. How secure your belongings are will depend on the safe box locking system.

Select A Place to Install A Safe Box

Before installing a wall safe, you will need to select the appropriate place. It is best to make your safe invisible to criminals to avoid theft and keep the box more secure. So, look for hidden places in your walls, behind a picture, for example. But choose a location that is still easily accessible so that you can get to your valuables when you need them.

You could hide a wall safe behind pictures or items of furniture. Or you could install your safe in a room a thief would not think to look in, like a toilet or laundry room. But remember to make sure that there is sufficient room between the wall studs to install your safe.

How to Install A Wall Safe

Installing a wall safe in a standard wall is not a big job. And you will not need any specialist tools. Here is a list of the tools you will need to install your wall safe, followed by step-by-step instructions.

What You Will Need:
  • Stud finder or hammer
  • Pencil or Chalk
  • A Ruler
  • Drywall Saw
  • Drill
  • Screws
Step-1: Identify the Studs

Wall safes must be installed on the studs of the walls. Therefore, it is essential to find the studs. You can detect wall studs by either tapping the wall or with an electric stud finder.

Using a stud finder is the easiest way to locate the studs. If the stud finder identifies a stud, it will be displayed on the readout. And a stud finder will give you a reasonable estimate of the center of the stud.

If you do not have a stud finder, you can also find the studs by tapping on the wall with a hammer. If there is an empty sound when you tap, then there is no stud. When the sound becomes a firmer thud, you will have found your stud.

If the studs are made of steel, you can hover a magnet on the wall and use the magnetic attraction to identify the stud position.

Step-2: Mark the Studs and Cut A Small Square Hole

To ensure that you can identify the studs later, mark each stud’s location with chalk or pencil. The marks will help you to cut the walls in the right place.
Now, cut a small square hole at the marked place by using a drywall saw large enough so that your hand can penetrate well into the spot.

When the hole is complete, insert your hand and check if there are any electrical wires inside. If you find any wires, you will have to be more careful when cutting the hole for the safe. You will need to look for plumbing as well. If your original location is unsuitable, you will need to choose an alternative place to install the safe. Otherwise, you can move on to the next step.

Step-3: Draw A Shape and Cut the Marked Area

Use a ruler to measure the wall safe, and then draw a square the same size on the wall with a pencil. Make sure the shape of the frame is not ragged. And the hole should be parallel to the stud so that the safe can be safely secured.

When you complete the mark on the wall, cut on the spot by using a drywall saw. Make sure that the cut part does not fall on you. And use a cover to protect furniture from the dust.

Step-4: Slide You Safe Box into The Hole

Now you are ready to slide the safe into the hole. First, look at the distance between the two studs. If the cut area is a bit too wide, you may need to use shims to make the safe fit snuggly.

Now slide the safe into the hole. You will be carrying the safe’s weight, and a wall safe can be heavy. So, take extra care when sliding the safe into the wall so that it does not accidentally fall on you. If necessary, ask someone to help you with the installation.

Step-5: Drill into The Studs and Tighten the Screws

Place the drill on the internal holes inside your safe and drill a hole into the wall’s stud. Then attach the safe box to the stud using screws. Then, tighten the screws so that safe is firmly secured to the stud. Tightening the screws as tight as possible will help to prevent your safe box from being stolen.

Step-6: Attach the Shelves

If you have followed every step correctly, then congratulations, your work is almost done! Now you have installed your safe into a wall; you can attach the shelves of your safe. And you will have a safe place to keep your valuables out of the hands of thieves.

Thanks for reading these wall safe installation instructions. We hope that you have found them useful. To sum up, to install a safe box, you must first select the appropriate safe box for your walls. Then, make sure the studs have been identified. And then, you follow these guidelines to install your safe.
