Ring Alarm Review – Overview

Ring Alarm, Wireless Home Security System, Burglar Alarm, House Alarm, Wireless Alarm System

The Ring Alarm is marketed as an affordable complete home security system. It’s a wireless home security system, so installation is simple. The basic system consists of a base unit, a keypad control center, a range extender, motion detectors and door / window entry contact sensors. The system comes in a range of pre-configured kits. Additional components can be bought separately to customize the system to your own needs. The entry level 5-piece kit has all the main components, plus one motion detector and one contact sensor.

The system works with the Ring App. The same app that you are already using if you have a Ring Doorbell. The Ring Alarm is also compatible with Alexa. The system will send alerts to your phone. Plus, there is a monitoring service which, at the time of writing, costs $10 per month, or $100 per year.

The cost of the Ring Alarm system is significantly lower than some other big-brand wireless alarm systems. The cost of the monitoring service is very reasonable too. Overall, the Ring Alarm home security system is a very good value for money home burglar alarm system. But it does have some drawbacks, which we will explain later. Here’s a short Ring Alarm promotional video:

What the Components Do

Ring alarm Components, Ring Alarm, Wireless Home Security System, Burglar Alarm, House Alarm, Wireless Alarm System

Base Station

The base station is what connects the alarm system to the internet and to the various sensors. It can be mounted on a wall or kept on a flat surface.

Keypad

The keypad arms and disarms the system from inside the house. The Ring alarm can also be armed and disarmed using Alexa or Ring app. There are three modes for the alarm system. The “Home” mode is for use when someone is home. You can define in the app which sensors will be operating in the home mode. This would usually be the entry sensors, but not the motion detectors. The “Away” setting is for use when no one is home. In this mode, all sensors will be monitored by default, but you can specify which sensors are monitored if you wish. When the system is set to “Disarmed” no sensors will be active and there will be no alerts. When you set the home or the way modes, there is a user-definable exit delay of up to 180 seconds.

Range Extender

The range extender extends the range of the base station to the other components. The standard range is 250 feet. The range extender extends that by a further 250 feet. The range extender plugs into any standard electrical outlet.

Motion Detector

The motion detector is a passive infrared sensor (PIR). It will detect motion in the room in which it is installed.

Contact Sensor

The contact sensor is a door / window entry detector. It will trigger the alarm if the door or window that it is fitted to is opened.

Ring Alarm Review – The Installation

Like all wireless home security systems, the Ring alarm needs no wiring. So, installation is simple. You need to plug in the base station, add it to your Ring account, and then connect it to your Wi-Fi. Then, you need to add the additional sensors. This is done by using a QR Code that comes with each sensor. You simply scan the code and the device is registered automatically.

The contact and motion sensors need no wiring. They are battery powered. They are fixed to the wall, doors or windows with adhesive tape. So that’s a straightforward job too. Depending on how many sensors you have, installation will take no more than half an hour.

Ring Alarm Review – What Are people Saying About it?

Overall, the Ring Alarm home security system receives very good reviews. It currently has a 4.5 out of 5 rating on Amazon. Most of the critical reviews stem from the lack “bells and whistles” with this system. That, and the lack of add-on components. The Ring Alarm home security system is a basic alarm system. That’s reflected in the price. You don’t get, for example, features to arm the system at a pre-set time. The range of Ring add-on sensors is also limited. At the time of writing, there is a Ring Alarm Panic Button, a Ring Alarm Flood and Freeze Sensor, and a Ring Alarm Smoke and CO Listener. So, the range of add-ons is quite limited when compared to similar wireless home security systems. However, the Ring Alarm system is still relatively new. We expect to see lots more functionality and add-on devices in the future.

Ring Alarm Review – The Pros and Cons

Pros
  • Cheaper than other big-brand alarm systems
  • High-Quality product
  • Low-cost monitoring service
  • Easy Installation
  • Works with Alexa
  • No long-term contract
  • Well-respected supplier
Cons
  • Limited availability of add-on components
  • Fairly basic alarm system
  • Limited connectivity to her smart home devices

Ring Alarm Review – The Final Verdict

The Ring Alarm home security system is a very good, basic burglar alarm system. The entry price of the equipment is lower than comparable brands. The ongoing cost of monitoring is very affordable too. Especially if you already have a Ring doorbell. What’s missing the moment is the extra functionality and the range of add-on devices that some other, more established wireless home security systems have. But we are sure that will improve with time. If you want a reliable home alarm system from a trusted supplier, go for the Ring alarm. If you want an all-singing, all-dancing home security system, you will have to pay more. Or, wait until Ring brings out more functionality and devices.
