Ring Video Doorbell 2 Review – The Features
The first thing we will look at in this Ring Video Doorbell 2 Review are the features of the doorbell itself. We’ll explain what’s in the Ring app later. The Ring Video Doorbell 2 does have a lot of features for a security doorbell, but is it the best video doorbell on the market? Let’s have a look.
The doorbell contains a high-quality 1080p HD video camera. That’s the same full HD resolution that you would get on a handheld video camera. It is a higher resolution than the original Ring Doorbell, and higher than many other smart doorbells. There are other Wi-Fi doorbell cameras, though, that do offer the same video quality.
Infrared Night Vision
The Ring Video Doorbell 2 will record or stream video at night as well. It has an Infrared Night Vision camera. The black and white night vision is not as sharp as the HD daytime video, but it is still more than adequate for the job.
Motion Activated Alerts
The Ring Video Doorbell 2 has a built-in motion sensor. It will send alerts to your phone if someone approaches your front door. Even if they don’t press the doorbell. That’s a great security feature to have. Some people have reported that the motion sensor in the original Ring Doorbell was a bit too sensitive. The Ring Video Doorbell 2 appears to have solved that problem.
The ability to hold a conversation with someone at the door is a must-have in a smart doorbell. So, this feature is no big surprise. However, the quality of sound that you get with the Ring Video Doorbell 2 is very good. The two-way talk operates via the Ring app on your mobile device.

The Ring Video Doorbell 2 can either be wired into your existing doorbell or it can be battery operated. If you are using it as a battery-operated wireless doorbell, a fully charged battery will last between six months and a year. The battery pack is removable from the doorbell for recharging. That is a vast improvement on the first-generation Ring Doorbell. You had to remove the entire doorbell to recharge that!
You get two interchangeable faceplates supplied with the Ring Video Doorbell 2. One is “Satin Nickel”, the other is “Venetian”. In other words, one is silver, and the other is dark gray!

The Ring Video Doorbell 2 does not come with any video storage features. Each time a new video is recorded, the last video will be lost. To be able to record, store, playback, and share videos, you will need to pay a monthly subscription of $3 per month. Some other video doorbells do offer limited video recording and storage features for free. If you have multiple ring Devices, for example, Ring security cameras, you can opt for Ring Protect Plus, which costs $10 per month.
Ring Video Doorbell 2 Review – The App
The Ring app is easy and intuitive to use. From within the app you can receive alerts, view a live video stream, and review past alerts. If you have subscribed to the cloud storage option, you can also view the video associated with those alerts.
There is a neighborhood function in the app that lets you share videos with neighbors who are also using a Ring doorbell. You could warn each other, for example, of a pushy salesman who might be knocking on all the doors in the street. More importantly, you could also share video of any suspicious characters seen in the neighborhood.
